➤ The sustainable main material: banana fibers
Banana fiber is a natural, untreated plant fiber that feels wonderfully natural. This abundant, renewable raw material comes from banana trees, which are widely cultivated in Indonesia. The fibrous bark detaches from the trunk as it grows, is then collected and dried in the sun for about a week, naturally creating its intense brown color. Subsequently, the individual strips are rolled into the characteristic, approximately 6 mm thick strands, which are processed by our production partners in Java into traditional basketry.

This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia.
In selecting our local production partners, we emphasize fair payment, safe working conditions, and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. All are experienced craftsmen of legal age. Especially the elderly, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the craft sector, allowing them to use the skills they learned from a young age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are to create something meaningful with this work and earn a good income. Since all work steps are performed by hand, the production process causes hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We guarantee all this through regular on-site visits and continuous personal contact with the companies.
➤ The production process: from raw material to finished basket
For our baskets, skilled artisans at our production partners in the Indonesian province of Central Java carefully and meticulously weave banana fiber strands into a specially manufactured metal frame that defines the exact shape and size of the basket. To ensure a stable and durable structure, the banana fiber is secured with transparent nylon threads. On average, it takes about two hours to complete each basket.
