Material: Raffia
Our placemats are made from plant fibers. Therefore, they smell and feel wonderfully natural.
Raffia (Corypha utan) naturally occurs in the steppe and forest areas of Southeast Asia. Approximately every two years, the plant renews its leaves and sheds the old ones, which are then collected by people, dried in the sun for several days to weeks, and processed into wickerwork depending on the desired degree of browning. The relative rarity and higher processing effort make this material slightly more expensive compared to other plant fibers. Although it is hardly known in Europe, the material has proven itself among the local population in Southeast Asia in the form of all kinds of everyday objects and is very popular due to its pleasantly soft, yet robust nature.

This placemat is handmade in Java, Indonesia.
When selecting our local producers, we value fair wages and good working conditions. Only adult and experienced craftsmen work in the companies from which we source our goods. No harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and permanent personal contact with the companies.
