Material: Water hyacinth
Our baskets are made from plant fibers. They therefore smell and feel wonderfully natural.
The water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows on rivers and lakes. It originally comes from South America but was also introduced to Southeast Asia. There, it is considered a weed because it reproduces incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen causes all underwater life to die off. Therefore, the plants must be regularly removed. To prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off, and the thick stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. The result is a sustainable raw material that is abundantly available for many weaving projects here at Soeji!

This basket is handmade in Java, Indonesia.
In selecting our local producers, we value fair wages and good working conditions. In the factories where we source our goods, we only work with adult and experienced artisans. No harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Because all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We guarantee all of this through regular on-site visits and continuous personal contact with the companies.
