Main materials: seagrass, banana fibers
Our baskets are made from plant fibers. They therefore smell and feel wonderfully natural.
What basket weavers commonly refer to as 'seagrass' is not actually an (underwater) plant, but a small, palm-like plant that is widespread on sandy beaches in the tropics of Asia. The leaves of the plants, which are often cultivated by people, are separated, cut into strips, dried, and then processed by hand.
Banana fibers are the fibers from the layered trunks of banana trees used in agriculture. The intensely brown color occurs naturally when the fibers are dried in the sun for about a week. Then the individual strips are rolled into the characteristic, approximately 6 mm thick strands. Only old, dying banana trees are used for this material. This gives these crops a second life as a dimensionally stable and robust raw material for many handmade baskets here at Soeji.

When selecting our local producers, we value fair wages and good working conditions. Only adult and experienced artisans work in the companies from which we purchase our goods. No harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Because all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and permanent personal contact with the companies.
