Matahari is a practical, round tray made of woven water hyacinth. Thanks to the invisible metal frame, it always stays in shape. In its largest size, it is even big enough to transport several meals at once.

Main material: Water hyacinth
Our trays are made of plant fibres. They therefore smell and feel wonderfully natural.
The water hyacinth is a tropical aquatic plant that grows on rivers and lakes. It actually comes from South America, but was also introduced to Southeast Asia. There it is considered a weed because it multiplies incredibly quickly and can cover entire bodies of water with a carpet of leaves. The resulting lack of light and oxygen causes all life underwater to die. Therefore, the plants must be removed regularly. To prepare the plants for further processing, the leaves are cut off and the thick stems are dried in the sun for three to seven days. The result is a sustainable raw material that is abundantly available here at Soeji for many woven goods!

This tray is handmade in Java, Indonesia.
When selecting our local producers, we value fair wages and good working conditions. Only adult and experienced artisans work in the companies from which we purchase our goods. No harmful chemicals are used in the production process. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process generates hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We ensure all of this through regular on-site visits and permanent personal contact with the companies.
